Ectopic Cutaneous Schistosomiasis: A Case Report
Abdullahi M. Ahmad¹, Zainab I. Babba²
Background: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by trematodes of the genus Schistosoma, endemic in many tropical regions. While common cutaneous manifestations include cercarial dermatitis, ectopic cutaneous schistosomiasis is rare and often mimics other dermatologic conditions, posing a diagnostic challenge. Case Presentation: We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with a two-month history of multiple erythematous papules in a zosteriform pattern on his posterior thorax. There was no history of pruritus, hematuria, or known water exposure. Initial clinical diagnosis was herpes zoster, and he was initially treated with oral acyclovir, prior to skin biopsy and histopathological diagnosis. Conclusion: Ectopic cutaneous schistosomiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic dermatomal eruptions in children from endemic regions, even in the absence of classical systemic features. Early recognition and tissue diagnosis are essential to avoid misdiagnosis and delay in treatment.
