Background: Post-Stroke Anxiety (PSA) has received less attention than other psychological issues confronting stroke patients. We investigated the presence of anxiety symptoms in post-stroke patients attending a neurology clinic at a tertiary hospital in Northwest Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 83 stroke survivors. Participants were given questionnaires that profiled their sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, as well as the Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) anxiety subscale. A HADS score of ≥8 was used to determine the presence of anxious symptoms. Results: The 83 participants recruited for study had a mean age of 56.8 years (s.d. = 10.2) and 62.7 % were female. Majority (60.2%) had formal education, 83.1% were employed, and 73.5% were married. Overall, the prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 34.9% while 4.8% were rated has having severe anxiety symptoms. Unemployment, having disabilities and post stroke complication were significantly associated with anxiety symptoms. Conclusion: This study further confirmed that the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in stroke survivors is significantly high among stroke patients with disabilities and other post stroke complications. In addition, unemployment is also a strong risk factor for anxiety symptoms among stroke patients. In view of this, psychosocial evaluation and intervention should be integrated into clinical care of stroke patients for early detection of anxiety symptoms. This may facilitate functional recovery and improve quality of life. Hence, we would like to suggest that it could be beneficial to consider incorporating anxiety screening into the stroke management process. |
