Background: Antioxidants have protective role in cancer by preventing the accumulation of ROS that may cause lipid peroxidation of fatty tissues. Previous studies implicated overproduction of lipid peroxidation by-products and disturbances in antioxidant defense system in the pathogenesis of cancer, none has shown relationship of those analytes with cancer duration in Zaria. Objective: This study was set to look at relationship between serum levels of antioxidant enzymes and cancer duration by comparing the results of serum antioxidant minerals and enzymes among young and elderly cancer patients and the relationship between the duration of cancer and serum levels of these analytes. Method: One hundred cancer patients who were radiologically diagnosed and histologically or cytologically confirmed and an equal number of apparently healthy aged and sex-matched controls were recruited. Their serum antioxidant minerals (selenium; Se, copper; Cu and zinc; Zn were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry while antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase; GPx superoxide dismutase; SOD and catalase; CAT) where measured by direct colorimetric methods. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS 21.0 USA 2021 where continuous variable was compared using student's t-test and values are considered statistically significant at p-value (p≤0.05). Results: The differences in the serum levels of Se, SOD, CAT, and GPO between elderly and younger cancer patients were significant (p<0.002, p<0.001, p<0.001and p<0.035 respectively). However, the serum levels of Cu and Zn in the two different age groups were not statistically significant (p>0.907, p>0.226). The mean cancer duration is 2.99years with a range of 0.4 to 11years. There was significant negative correlation between the duration of cancer and each of Zn, Se, and GPO (r= -0.252, p<0.011; r = -0.346, p<0.001; r = -0.830, p<0.001 respectively).
